HEAD OF DIVISION – AGRICULTURE AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT

As part of its company and business development strategy, UNIQUE has established the Division “Agriculture and Rural Development” two years ago. This decision takes care of the fact that the company’s agriculture-related portfolio increased significantly over recent years. Further strengthening the agricultural and rural development focus would allow for complementing our traditionally strong coverage of the forestry and climate change sectors and for offering our cli-ents high quality and custom-made services and solutions across the entire landscape.

UNIQUE sees excellent business opportunities for further expanding the agriculture and rural development portfolio, since many national and international development organizations are putting increased emphasis on the sector. Such organizations include the World Bank, KfW, GIZ, and DfID. The German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is im-plementing several relevant programs as part of its “One World without Hunger” Initiative. The global challenge of feeding 9 billion people by 2050 while sustainably managing natural re-sources will be high on the international development agenda for many years to come. In addi-tion to being a key focal area of public sector support, these socio-economic and environmen-tal dynamics become increasingly relevant to the private sector. International and national companies which depend on the natural resource base for their business are concerned about reliably producing their outputs or sourcing their inputs at the required quality and quantity.

The Division “Agriculture and Rural Development” offers both analytical work and advisory ser-vices on the one hand and implementation of investment and technical assistance programs. The division covers the following major topics: (i) sustainable intensification of agricultural pro-duction (including livestock); (ii) development of inclusive and sustainable land use ap-proaches, innovation systems, and value chains; (iii) sustainable landscape management (cov-ering agriculture and forestry); (iv) participatory forestry management; and (v) community based development in rural areas.
