The Yayu UNESCO Biosphere Reserve protects one of the remnants of Afromontane forest in Ethiopia. These forests are under threat due to population growth and unsustainable agricultural practices causing forest degradation and deforestation. Coffee cultivation under the canopy of native tree species is one of the key income sources in Yayu but also a recognized a driver of deforestation. To increase the resilience of coffee farming households and stop the trend of forest loss, the Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung and Unique demonstrated good coffee agroforestry practices and supported the government in developing a monitoring methodology for avoided forest degradation. The methodology will focued on the identification of cost-efficient remote sensing methods applicable to the coffee cultivation system common in the area.
- Designing a web-based monitoring and information system for project activities
- Assessment of scaling up sustainable coffee production methods
- Development of an investment-ready business proposal for smallholder coffee production
- Developing a monitoring methodology for forest degradation
- Developing a concept for integration of avoided forest degradation in a forested landscape program
