Information on the employment effects of the forest sector and its value chain is incompletely recorded worldwide. The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture is therefore funding a study on the economic importance of forest-based employment with a special focus on the role of the informal sector. The aim of this study is to better support public and private donors in their decision-making. UNIQUE carried out this study in cooperation with the Thünen-Institue, the Food and Agriculture Organization, as well as local partner institutions. The actors, the relevance of the legal framework and the influence of economic variables were examined in order to describe employment benefits in the forestry sector. Case studies in the partner countries Kenya, the Ukraine, Vietnam and Ecuador supplemented a global overview study.
