Komaza, a social enterprise founded in 2006, is one of only a few commercial forestry plantation companies existing in Kenya today that works with small-scale farmers. The project contributes to national climate change and sustainable development goals and commitments. As of 2021, Komaza has established 6,860 hectares of plantations. Their goal is to expand forestry operations in collaboration with smallholders by another 30,000 hectares by 2030. The company’s business model is unique in that Komaza promotes decentralized smallholder forestry. Carbon certification can provide additional cash flow to the project and facilitate additional activities to improve the social and biodiversity impact of the project. UNIQUE supported Komaza throughout the carbon validation and certification process with the Verified Carbon Standard.
