The majority of the rural population in the Aral Sea region lives off of irrigated agriculture and hardly benefited from the last four years of economic growth. The conditions for economic growth are deteriorating due to soil overuse and the drying up of the lake. The GIZ project: “Ecologically oriented regional development in the Aral Sea region” (ECO-ARAL) in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, seeks to improve the economic development of the region across borders while considering ecological sustainability. The project focuses on roughly 2 million people in rural areas across the target regions. Unique was selected to identify and develop innovative business models in the region with high upscaling potential and low environmental impact.

  • Screening of the agriculture, livestock, tourism, waste and forestry sectors
  • Analyse the contribution of these sectors to the GDP, employment, profitability and environmental impact
  • Identification of innovative business models in two selected sectors
  • Economic modelling for the selected business models
  • Identification of synergies with other sectors and between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan
  • Development of a roadmap to support further upscaling of the selected business innovations
