Agricultural Carbon Project Development
Background
The World Bank is exploring the ways in which community-generated carbon credits can deliver clear benefits for rural smallholders and communities while mitigating climate change. The sustainable intensification of agricultural systems is imperative for the agricultural sector in order to reduce poverty, foster economic growth, and reduce the pressure on natural resources such as native forests. UNIQUE led the consultant consortium of Joanneum Research and ENCOFOR and supported the Government of Kenya, the World Bank and VI agroforestry – the project developer of the Western Kenya Agricultural Carbon Project – to develop the project and the Sustainable Agricultural Land Management (SALM) carbon accounting methodology.
