Background

Due to climate change, the conditions for agriculture, forestry, and nature conservation in Germany are experiencing significant transformations. Production conditions are becoming more demanding and farmers are facing new challenges. Simultaneously, agriculturally used areas hold considerable potential for CO2 sequestration, offering an avenue for active involvement in climate protection. In the scope of a conceptual study, Unique was commissioned by the Nature Park Südschwarzwald and the Nature Park Obere Donau to develop strategies for enhancing CO2 sequestration across various land use categories. In close collaboration with landowners, the nature parks, and a project advisory board, practical approaches are being devised to optimize CO2 storage on a landscape level.

Our contribution

  • Formulation of measures to enhance regional CO2 sequestration
  • Crafting practical, tailored recommendations for participating landowners
  • Estimation of the potential for CO2 sequestration within the nature parks' area
  • Surveying regional emitters to evaluate the demand for CO2 certificates
  • Analysis of the local carbon market and feasibility assessment within the political framework
