Community Forestry and Climate Change Adaptation
Background
Despite the abundance of natural resources, Honduras is one of the poorest countries in Latin America. Climate change has a direct impact on the poor rural population, who are more vulnerable to extreme climate events. In the National Forest Program as well as in the National Climate Strategy community forestry is regarded as a key element to reduce poverty, soil erosion, deforestation, forest fires and as the main strategy for climate change adaptation. UNIQUE was contracted on behalf of the German development cooperation Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) to develop the climate change adaptation strategy for Honduras. Based on a model elaborated in a previous GIZ-supported project, the forests managed by communities were increased to 1 million hectares.
