Concept Preparation for the Biocarbon Fund Project “Green Belt Movement”
Background
The Green Belt Movement (GBM) is a grassroots social movement mainly led by women to improve the status of women and their communities. Its mission is to mobilize community consciousness for environmental conservation, self-determination, equity, improved livelihoods and governance and to promote peaceful togetherness and a culture of cooperativeness using tree planting as an entry point. Since its beginning in 1997, about 6 million trees were planted per year, aiming to generate a sustainable income from this activity by selling certified emission reductions to the World Bank BioCarbon Fund. UNIQUE supported GBM in the project development and implementation.
