Lessons Learned from Biodigesters for Cooking
Background
In many developing countries, wood, crop and livestock waste are primarily used for cooking and heating purposes. The use of woods and dependence on solid fuels is a major public health risk. A biodigester is a closed and air-tight vessel in which organic material is deposited to ferment and produce methane gas for energy use. This technology can contribute to improved health, reduce energy costs and contribute to environmental sustainability. Therefore, biodigesters have been promoted across the world for many years. In preparation of two new World Bank biodigester promotion programs, UNIQUE was contracted to compile lessons learned from successful biodigester programs. This compilation will serve as a basis to explore ways in which agriculture can uniquely contribute to the introduction, adoption and use of clean cooking solutions globally.
Our contribution
