Background

Nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs) are emerging as the main instrument through which developing countries will reduce GHG emissions with support from developed countries. With over 9 million hectares of pastureland, the Kyrgyz Republic’s livestock sector holds significant potential to support green growth through improved pastureland management combined with measures to improve related value chains for livestock products. This holds dual mitigation and adaptation potential as climate change has already a strong impact on the sector while improved pasture and livestock management has potential to sequester carbon and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. UNIQUE’s contribution was to conduct a scoping of livestock value chains and to explore how a NAMA can contribute to trigger economic transformational change towards a green economy.

Our contribution

  • Assessment for the institutional framework in the pasture and livestock sector.
  • Review national and sector-specific climate change, pasture and livestock policies.
  • Analyze NAMA policies and measures and their GHG mitigation potential.
  • Identify livestock value chains and corresponding investment potential.
  • Scope potential sources of climate finance.
