Preparation of a Project Design Document (PDD) for the BioCarbon Fund
Background
With a grant from the European Union (EU), the National Forest Authority (NFA) in Uganda supports the private sector in establishing timber plantations. This is crucial considering that only a few thousand hectares of timber plantations remain in the country and that 60,000 hectares are required to meet the national demand. With additional revenues arising from generated carbon credits the NFA, supported by UNIQUE, aimed to expand the plantation area. Serving also as a demonstration project, the aim was to approximate the fields of action between private and community based investors in Uganda. Reforestation blocks of pine and mixed native species will cover an area of 1,600 hectares. The BioCarbon Fund of the World Bank pledged to buy the certified emission reductions from the project.
