Sustainable Forest Management Guidelines for Natural Forests
Background
The Global Environment Facility (GEF) project under implementation by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) addresses land degradation through the integration of sustainable land use management principles in policies and practice. In this context sustainable forest management plays an important role. The last national forest management plan was compiled in 1993. UNIQUE was contracted to update the existing management plan, taking into account timber production potential as well as environmental services provided by forests. The management plan should also address typical small island problems, i.a. little area suitable for timber production, lacking economy of scale, lack of harvesting technology.
