Verification support for Agricultural Carbon Project
Background
The World Bank supported the Kenya Agricultural Carbon Project which is the first African soil carbon project piloted in Western Kenya region. The project aimed to address climate change adaptation and mitigation in the agricultural sector among smallholder farmers by improving agricultural productivity in the Nyanza and Western Provinces. The project was undertaken by 3,000 registered farmer groups with about 60,000 small-scale subsistence farmers who carry out mixed-cropping systems on 45,000 ha. The project was validated in June 2012 under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and verified in March 2013. UNIQUE supported the preparation of the verification through participatory training and capacity building of the monitoring team in Kenya.
