Background

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from livestock have been increasing as a proportion of total agricultural emissions in developing countries. The Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security Research Program, the Global Research Alliance and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), commissioned UNIQUE to assess the current status of Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) of livestock emissions and emission reductions in the context of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The purpose of the study was to identify opportunities and options for developing countries to improve MRV of livestock emissions. The scope of the study included national GHG inventories, as well as reporting on the GHG effects of mitigation actions and progress in achieving Nationally Determined Contributions.

Our contribution

  • Assessed the quality of GHG inventory reporting from 140 developing countries.
  • Interviewed MRV practitioners to understand enablers and barriers to improvement.
  • Supported a workshop at FAO Headquarters to discuss findings with inventory compilers and users.
  • Peer reviewed report on opportunities and options for improving MRV of livestock GHG emissions.
