Background

About 20 million people live in the project region of Cuernavaca and Toluca in Mexico. This densely populated area is surrounded by isolated protected areas, managed by the central and local governments. The pressure on existing natural resources is high und endangers biodiversity and the ability of the environment to deliver the full range of ecosystem services. The new GIZ project seeks to improve biodiversity conservation outside the protected areas connecting the different ecosystems. The project aims to create synergies between existing projects supported by German Cooperation and improve coordination at different government levels. The Government’s new policy aims at increasing productivity of forests – an area where UNIQUE has specific expertise and knowledge.

  • Project planning for biodiversity conservation outside protected areas.
  • Creation of synergies between existing projects.
