Background

The Natura 2000 network is made up of areas designated under the EU Habitats and Birds Directives. Management plans for these areas must be developed and incorporated into the forest management and operational planning of Germany’s federal states. In the state of Baden-Württemberg, the state’s Forest Research Institute (FVA) proposed an approach for integrating and implementing the Natura 2000 management plans in the state-managed forests. UNIQUE provided technical support during elaboration of this approach. The proposed approach is important as it contains procedures for the management of private and communally owned forests.
