Background

The Mekong Delta is Vietnam’s most important agricultural region feeding more than 145 million people. It faces existential threats, such as sea level rise and coastal ecosystem damage due to climate change. The GIZ Integrated Coastal Management Program (ICMP/CCEP) supports the Vietnamese authorities in addressing these challenges. ICMP/CCEP tested several technologies aimed at improving the livelihoods of the rural population and plans to scale up promising technologies by leveraging additional finance from public and private financial institutions. Integrated coastal protection is among the technology packages considered as having potential to be scaled up. In this context, UNIQUE was contracted to conduct an in-depth feasibility assessment of large-scale integrated coastal protection measures in the Mekong Delta.
