Greenhouse Gas Quantification of Sustainable Soy Production
Background
Agricultural supply chains are facing increasing pressure to quantify and reduce Scope 3 emissions, while data gaps, shifting input markets, and variable soil carbon dynamics make robust accounting particularly challenging. The IFC supports private-sector clients with sustainable finance and climate-related performance improvements. The assignment aimed to quantify on-farm emissions in soy production for a defined supplier set and to derive practical mitigation options, including insights related to soil carbon and best-practice recommendations. Unique was selected due to its experience with agricultural carbon accounting under recognized standards (VM0042), particularly in Brazil, and its ability to bridge technical quantification with implementable farm practices.
Our contribution
- Definition of accounting boundaries aligned with VM0042 requirements
- Soil carbon measurements and quantification on select farms
- Full-census data trend analysis to pinpoint mitigation levers in the soy production of select farms
- Co-development of farm questionnaire and training of local technicians
- Facilitation of stakeholder workshops to align methods and
