Impact Assessement of Ground Water Drawdown
Background
In the Kenzingen district, the ‘Johanniterwald’ forest protects a significant amount of groundwater supplying the nearby city of Herbolzheim with fresh drinking water. To monitor these important water resources, a number of ground water measurement stations were built on the forest site and pumping tests were conducted between 2013 and 2014. The results show the groundwater has sunk below the sustainable extraction point. As a result, UNIQUE was commissioned to explore the impacts of over-extraction on tree stands and forest biodiversity habitats, focusing particularly on the implications for EU Natura 2000 nature and biodiversity policy.
