National Forestry Inventory and Capacity Building
Background
Forests in the Kyrgyz Republic occupy a small part of the total territory, however they have a significant socio-economic value for the country. Past political decisions shifted forest management from overharvesting to conservation of forest. Nowadays the state, the largest forest owner in the country, is determined to promote the sustainable development of the forestry sector. In order to collect reliable forestry data, the State Agency for Environmental Protection and Forestry (SAEPF), with financial support from the World Bank, planned the implementation of the second National Forest Inventory (NFI#2). UNIQUE, in consortium with CAREC, was responsible for the implementation of the NFI#2 and to build capacity for a sustainable monitoring structure.
