Background

Rhineland-Palatinate has approx. 160,000 hectares of rhizome forests. The classic form of management of these forests has come to a standstill in recent decades. Without management, the protective functions are heavily impaired, especially on steep slopes. The aim of the project was to provide instructions on how to manage forests adapted to climate change in order to preserve their soil and nature conservation functions as well as their object protection function, e.g. for roads and railway lines. The instructions for action should be implemented on demonstration areas. This was associated with silvicultural coaching of multipliers.

Our contribution

  • Identification and analysis of stick deflection forests with outstanding protective functions.
  • Evaluation of the protective function and its endangerment, e.g. by heavy rainfall.
  • Creation of monitoring and demonstration areas for the exemplary implementation of the manual.
  • Implementation of expert workshops.
