Background

Together with PAYCO, a multinational investment company, UNIQUE created the ForCerPa consortium. Since its creation in 2002, this consortium has invested in the sustainable management of 5,550 ha of native forest in the humid eastern forests of Paraguay. ForCerPa produces high quality semi-processed tropical wood products for the domestic market and for export. It is the first and only FSC-certified forest enterprise in the country. Indigenous communities participate in the project and have user and hunting rights in the forests. Additionally, GIZ and UNIQUE have established a Public Private Partnership (PPP). The objective is to optimize the timber value chain through innovative technologies proving that the triple bottom line of forest investments provides higher and more sustainable returns as compared to cattle farming in this region.
