Irrigated rice farming is a significant source of methane. Smallholders face complex Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) challenges, as well as eligibility and market barriers, while biochar scaling encounters regulatory, financing, and capacity gaps. GIZ’s i4Ag CORE program partners with Olam Agri and AfricaRice to valorize greenhouse gas reductions in Nigeria’s rice value chain. Unique developed integrated roadmaps for Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) rice and biochar, aligning standards, MRV, and scaling pathways.

• Mapping of stakeholders, governance, and benefit-sharing options for the rice component
  • Development of a roadmap for AWD/rice-based biochar projects
  • Align roadmaps with Verra VM0051 for the rice component
  • Support biochar technology selection
