Serbia’s heat and energy production is currently based mainly on fossil fuels. Additionally, existing power plants are old and often inefficient. However, there is a great interest from the Serbian side to modernize energy production and switch to using renewable energy sources. In this context biomass energy plays an important role as it provides a renewable natural base in the long term. In 2012, KfW banking group and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) launched a 5 year program to develop an electrification and heat generation scheme using biomass. UNIQUE was contracted to support the preparation and evaluation of the GIZ program wood energy component of this program.

  • Estimation of the biomass potentials and their availability.
  • Assessment of the feasibility of wood energy projects.
  • Sustainability assessment concerning the extension of wood energy.
  • Elaboration of first biomass project notes regarding technical cooperation intervention.
