The International Climate Initiative (ICI) of the German Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) contracted GIZ to identify sectoral approaches for land use mitigation options and to launch demonstration activities in China. UNIQUE was contracted by GIZ to provide technical support for this project. Among the most promising mitigation options in the forestry sector is increasing carbon stocks through close-to-nature forest management. In the agriculture sector more efficient use of fertilizer can reduce emissions and water pollution. UNIQUE’s tasks comprise the evaluation and testing of respective low emission land use management options, the development of respective carbon accounting protocols, and private sector incentives through market-based and public policy mechanisms.
- Assessment of low emission land use management practices.
- Assessment of mitigation benefits and development of carbon accounting protocols.
- Exploring market-based and public policy mitigation incentive mechanisms.
