The total area of FSC-certified forests in Germany will increase significantly in the near future. Consequently the availability of FSC-certified roundwood will rise. However, the number of FSC Chain of Custody (CoC) certified sawmills in Germany which could process the available raw material into FSC-certified sawn timber stagnates at a comparatively low level. Hence, FSC Germany contracted UNIQUE to conduct a study with the aims to:
Improve the participation of German sawmills in the FSC-value chain.
Identify options to increase the offer of FSC-certified saw timber in Germany.
Improve the understanding of sawmilling industry requirements for a better standing of FSC CoC certification in the sector.

  • Quantification of the demand for FSC-certified timber by FSC CoC certified sawmills in Germany.
  • Description and quantification of demand for FSC-certified sawn timber in Germany.
  • Analysis of the effects of marketing strategies applied by FSC-roundwood producers on sawmills.
  • Description of opportunities for a more active development of the market for FSC-sawn timber.
  • Elaboration of recommendations for a better integration of sawmills in the FSC-value chain.
