Efficient Round Wood Transport

Low maximum permissible weight of roundwood transports often leads to high logistical expenses in Germany compared to other European countries. Some consider the German wood industry to be at a disadvantage due to these higher logistical expenses of transporting roundwood. One way of reducing costs and also greenhouse gas emissions is to improve the coordination of logistics to have fewer and more loaded journeys. A research project conducted by the Holzwerke Keck (Ehningen) within the framework of the cluster initiative Baden-Württemberg reveals the effects of higher total weight and a higher proportion of loaded journeys on logistical expenses and greenhouse gas emissions in Baden-Württemberg. UNIQUE was involved in this project together with various research institutes and praxis partners.
- Coordination and securing of scientific standards of all project partners.
- Identification of competition-related factors of roundwood transport.
- Determining the effects of higher total weight in roundwood transport on greenhouse gas emissions.
- Evaluation of management and core processes according to a criteria and indicator system.
- Coordination and delivery of a final report based on scientific standards.
