The Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) Project Hunan III will be implemented in eight counties in Hunan, China. The project will cover different forms of forest management units and various forest types, including natural broadleaf dominated forests, Chinese fir and pine plantations, as well as bamboo forests. The 2014-2020 climate change plan of China includes forestry-related targets explicitly related to forest area, volume and biomass. It also intends to increase the evolving national carbon market, and will allow projects focused on improving forest management to be registered and certified. The objective of this study was to assess the eligibility of SFM activities for integration into forest carbon projects within domestic and international carbon market schemes.
- Assessment of the state of national and international carbon markets.
- Review the eligibility of SFM activities within the Hunan III project.
- Provide a training and capacity building workshop in Changsha on forest carbon project development.
- Develop a roadmap for the Hunan III project to become eligible for the carbon market.
