Mapping of Red and Black Kite in Baden-Wuerttemberg
Countries
Germany
Duration
2019
Client
Landesanstalt für Umwelt Baden-Württemberg (LUBW)
The federal state of Baden-Württemberg has experienced an immense increase in wind power installations and further wind energy plants are planned to be built in the near future. Some bird species are especially susceptible to collisions with wind turbine rotors, including the red and black kite (Milvus milvus and Milvus migrans). In order to scientifically assess the impact of wind power expansion on these kite species, a systematic monitoring of all relevant breeding sites was conducted by the Institute for the Environment, Measurements and Nature Conservation of the German federal state of Baden-Württemberg (LUBW). UNIQUE was commissioned to carry out monitoring in the Swabian Alb and coordinated several ornithologists.
- Mapping of breeding sites and determinating breeding success.
- Incorporating sightings and hints from local conservation volunteers as well as hunters into mapping design.
- Reporting and cartographically presentating the results.
- Coordinating mapping activities.
