Study for a German Carbon Forest Standard

There is a growing need to structure German forests in a way that addresses climate change, but financing forest conversion is often a challenge. The voluntary carbon market offers the opportunity to reconcile the financing needs of forest owners with the private sector’s desire to compensate. EVA is therefore in the process of developing a forest climate standard (WKS) for Germany. Central to any climate standard is the additionality of issued climate credits. The challenge is to make the proof of additionality robust yet cost-efficient for project developers. UNIQUE conducted a background study for the WKS and developed a way of proving additionality for climate certificates from reforestation on deforested areas in Germany.
