The World Bank BioCarbon Fund seeks to promote large-scale comprehensive landscape management through performance-based carbon finance. In Zambia a partnership with the Government and the Community Markets for Conservation (COMACO), a social enterprise linking more than 20,000 smallholder farmers, was selected as a promising institutional platform for pioneering environmental performance payments. UNIQUE provides conceptual support for identifying climate-smart agricultural practices that can increase income while achieving climate resilience, mitigation and forest conservation benefits. The design of a performance monitoring approach that combines existing carbon accounting methodologies for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+) and incentivizing Sustainable Agricultural Land Management (SALM) is also supported.
- Analysis of the methodological consistency when integrating REDD and SALM methodologies.
- Developing a criteria catalogue to test eligibility and additionality for both methodologies.
- Data assessment and review of data gathering procedures.
- Assessment of COMACO’s capacity to monitor environmental performance.
- Preparation of a work plan for project baseline establishment.
