Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH

The Bonn Challenge is a global aspiration to restore 150 million hectares of the world’s deforested and degraded lands by 2020. The German Government supports countries with large potential for forest landscape restoration (FLR) by providing technical and financial assistance. In the context of BMZ’s R100 initiative, the GIZ seeks to assess the FLR potential of Madagascar. UNIQUE was contracted to identify the most promising FLR opportunities in selected regions of the country. The assignment outputs include a spatially explicit assessment of forest landscape restoration options, and an analysis of the costs and benefits of different FLR options. In addition, UNIQUE assessed options for attracting the private sector to finance the implementation of promising options identified and to link them to existing funding and relevant programs.

  • Adaptation of global methodology for assessing FLR applicable to other countries.
  • In-depth field assessment of FLR options in prioritized regional states.
  • Assessment of enabling environment conditions and investment climate for private sector engagement.
  • Results presentation to in-country stakeholders and clients to ensure ownership and subsequent up-take.
