Livestock accounts for 14 % of total global greenhouse gas emissions, and is the largest source of emissions in many developing countries. It is expected that the emissions will continue to increase in the next decades. Guidance on practical methods for developing countries to estimate emissions is limited. The project aimed to develop best practices for the estimation of national livestock emissions, and mitigation potentials at Tier II levels, and provide decision-support for achieving and tracking Nationally Determined Contributions in the livestock sector under the obligations of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change transparency framework. AgResearch New Zealand and its business unit the New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre contracted UNIQUE based on our expertise on this subject in developing countries.

  • Improved understanding of the implications of incomplete, uncertain, or inaccurate data for tracking progress.
  • Development of generalizable guidance for handling missing data and to improve transparency.
