Improper land use leads to erosion, nutrient depletion, and other forms of soil degradation. Soil conservation and rehabilitation (SPR) approaches have a huge potential to contribute to climate change adaptation, mitigation, and food security, as well as soil organic carbon sequestration. The GIZ ProSoil program works in eight partner countries to implement SPR approaches. The program aims to monitor and compare the climate effects of the SPR approaches and connect SPR projects to climate finance through the voluntary carbon market. The objective of this study was to i) support the operationalization of the mitigation component of the climate monitoring system and ii) develop a scalable carbon project from one of the country packages under a voluntary carbon standard.
- Improvement and implementation of the climate-monitoring tool in all country packages
- Capacity building and knowledge transfer between country packages
- Design and establishment of an operational and cost-effective soil carbon certification scheme
- Identification and coaching of a coordinating entity as project proponent for the carbon project
- Establishment of a digital monitoring system for certification under the voluntary carbon standard
