Generating carbon credits has been identified as a means to strengthen the West Africa Food System Resilience Program (FSRP), which is a project financed by the World Bank. In Burkina Faso, a regional FSRP project is supported by carbon credits generated from sustainable agricultural land management (SALM) activities, which sequester carbon in croplands and grasslands. The objective of the FSRP-SALM project component was to establish a carbon project for the voluntary carbon market according to the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) from Verra. The assignment encompassed all phases of carbon project development, including the mapping of eligible lands, proposal of the design of a benefit sharing mechanism and development of a monitoring system. The project was undertaken together with the local non-governmental organization (NGO) Tiipaalga.
- Mapping lands eligible under the VCS carbon standard
